Access Multibeam Data

There are two methods available for requesting access to WHOI multibeam data:

Access Data by Cruise

Search for Data by Geographic Area

Use this option if you know which days from a particular cruise you need. Prior to requesting data, you should:

  • Use the Cruise Information page to determine which cruise you are interested in. Look at lat/lon bounds, or view a ship-track to see where data is located.
  • Download a PostScript file in order to establish which dates contain data of interest. Both a page size (A-size) version and a plotter size (E-size) version are available. The E-size is appropriate for plotters such as the HP-650C.
  • If the available Postscript files are not sufficient, download trackline navigation data, and use your own software for evaluation. There is no fee for this data.
  • Verify the status and quality of available data. Some data, collected during engineering evaluation, might not contain useful bathymetric information.

By entering the latitude and longitude bounds of your area of interest, you can locate which data (if any) you need. A few notes:

  • Data is indexed by whole degrees.
  • Downloading PostScript trackline plots or navigation data can also be helpful in interpreting search results.
  • You can submit a request for the results of data searches.

If necessary, acquire software for actually using this data prior to your request. See Other Multibeam Links for available software.

For either method, once a request is received, an invoice will be generated by WHOI. Once billing procedures have been established, the desired data transfer will occur. Small amounts of data may be available on-line without charge.

Note that, in general, data collected over two years ago is also available from the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center. Click Here for the NGDC Multibeam Site.
